The initial forced labor in the British North American colonies
involved indentured
servants who served a limited amount of time and were then
freed. Many whites volunteered to serve a period of time in
exchange for funds to pay for their trip to North America. Although
these indentured servants were only temporary slaves, they were
slaves in every sense of the word. Owners could mistreat
them and even choose their sexual partners. Use of
indentured servants continued through April, 1775, when prominent
Virginia planter George Washington advertised a
reward for the return of 8 white and 2 black runaways.
s
The Africans and many Irish were forced to travel to the
British colonies. Irish were sometimes sentenced to "transportation
to America" for illegal acts. Over 300,000 Irish
were sent to North America and the West Indies as slaves.
. Thousands of children
from London streets were rounded up and sent to the Americas.
Most indentured servants were white, particularly Irish, but
some were Africans like
Anthony Johnson who like white indentured servants was given
some land after being freed. Johnson used indentured servants
on his land.
Later when a decision was made to allow people to be held as
permanent slaves, only Africans could be permanent slaves because
they were foreigners. The law didn't allow British subjects to
be permanent slaves. However, initially black children of
indentured servants could be treated as permanent slaves because the
mother's status as free or nor free determined the child's
status. If the mother was a slave the child woul be a
slave. This practice differed from the traditional
practice of having the father's social status determine the child's
status. A white slave child would be considered an
indentured servant. A black slave child would become a
permanent slave.
By the time permanent slavery began whites and blacks had been
having relationships
for years and produced children of mixed ancestry. Some
plantation owners forced
white female indentured servants to mate with black men so the
children would become permanent slaves. This practice
increased the portion of the slave population that had European
[white] genes as well as African [black] genes. The
slave population received additional white DNA from slave owners and
overseers.
The relationships among those of mixed ancestry and between those
with mixed ancestry and whites were producing children who
could " pass
for white " in the 18th Century. Some with a slightly
dark complexion might have claimed to be of North American or
Mediterranean ancestry to gain acceptance as whites.
The relationship between Thomas Jefferson and his sister-in-law and
virtual wife Sally
Hemings provides an example of this situation. Hemings
was the daughter of a union between Jefferson's father-in-law
John
Wayles. and a slave. Wayles took Hemings' mother as his
concubine after his first three wives died. Hemings was
legally classified as "white" and had long straight
hair, but the social situation and laws governing slavery likely
made an actual marriage impossible. Some of their
children later passed for white after being freed and leaving
Virginia.
This situation demonstrates that slavery was no longer about "race"
or "color" in 1800. Even though Hemings was the "white"
daughter of a plantation owner, she was still considered a slave who
became part of the property of her father's estate when he died in
1774.
Various accounts in the following years indicate that household
servants were often of lighter complexion than field
slaves. Many suggest this situation indicates color
prejudice. The more likely explanation is that the household
servants had lighter complexions because they were related to the
plantation owner.
By the time of the Civil War there were 5,000 black slave owners
and many slaves who were light complexioned or even
white.
The strange case of Jane / Alexina
Morrison demonstrates that slavery wasn't necessarily about
color. According to the slave trader who sold her in Louisiana
the blonde haired blue-eyed young woman he called "Jane" was born a
slave. The woman who called herself "Alexina" sued him for
kidnapping her after she escaped from him. The case bounced around
the Louisiana courts just before the Civil War with juries siding
with the woman and the courts with the slave trader. It
apparently is still technically before the courts.
Regardless of which person was telling the truth, the fact that the
courts even considered the possibility of Morrison being a slave
demonstrates that white slaves were a part of southern slavery by
the start of the Civil War. Some of the escaped slaves
whose narratives were published before the Civil War mentioned
having seen white slaves. Harpet's
Weekly in January carried a picture of slaves recently
freed by the Union army who were white.

The Real Story of Slavery - Part 1
Many Americans believe slavery only involved white people
owning black people. They believe the master race was white
and the slave race was black. North American slavery actually
involved relatively rich people,[e.g. land owners] owning poor
people who might or might not be of the same color.
There were two types of forced laborers brought to North America: indentured servants and permanent slaves. Most of the primarily Irish indentured servants were forced to travel to North America, but some were volunteers. The first Africans were treated as indentured servants but were eventually treated as permanent slaves. Members of the two groups worked together and the historical account indicates there was sufficient sexual contact between the two to produce a hybrid group of permanent slaves whose members could be called "black Irish".
Unfortunately, the fact that most slaves were black and most owners were white led to a belief among some whites that this situation meant blacks are inferior to whites. This belief began during the slave era in part as a way to justify treating some people as slaves in an otherwise free country.
The first Africans arrived in Jamestown in 1619 only 14 years after the founding of the settlement. During the two centuries of the Atlantic slave trade only about 500,000 additional Africans were imported into North America. Britain led the way to ending the Atlantic slave trade in 1807 and the United States quickly followed to outlaw the importation of slaves without prohibiting the internal slave trade
.
Initially North American forced laborers were white temporary slaves called "indentured servants" who served for a specified term such as 5-10 years. The first Africans who arrived at Jamestown were treated as indentured servants . Anthony Johnson arrived in 1620 and received some land from the Virginia colony after he was freed. In 1651 he owned five indentured servants (four white and one black. man named John Casor, who was considered a permanent slave).
The term "indentured servant" is deceptive because during their period of indenture "servants" could be brutally mistreated like regular slaves. Some owners treated much cheaper Irish indentured servants worse than ;lifetime slaves. Africans cost from 20-50 pounds Sterling compared to about 5 pounds Sterling for an Irishman.
Owners could even choose who servants would mate with like they were breeding horses. Owners might use whites to breed lighter colored slaves to be sold. Raising slaves for sale would become a signaficant part of the plantation economy. Light colored females would eventually be sold as "fancy slaves" to be prostitutes or concubines who might command a higher price than a prime field hand.
Many servants were children picked up from London streets. The exploitation of children in the North American workplace would continue into the 20th Century.
Europe didn't have a large enough population to support large scale agriculture in the Western Hemisphere when colonization began. The British used the colonies to relocate the Irish, but Ireland only had a population of 1.5 million. The Spanish use of African slaves had begun before the discovery of land available for settlement in the Western Hemisphere.
Africans had been capturing, enslaving and selling each other for thousands of years before Christopher Columbus discovered a huge new market for African slave traders. Africans continued to enslave each other after the end of North American slavery. There are reports that Africans still practice slavery.
The career of Englishman John Newton demonstrates not only that whites could be slaves, but that those who engaged in the slave trade could also be slaves. Newton was a sailor on a slave ship whose shipmates sold him to a West African slave trader because they didn't get along with him. A friend of Newton's retired ship captain father arranged to free Newton. Newton evenstually got a position as the captain of a slave ship. A religious experience convinced Newton to become a Christian minister and become active in the movement to abolish slavery. He wrote the popular hymn "Amazing Grace" which according to gospel singer Larnelle Harris uses a west African sorrow chant for the melody.

African-American Is a Racist Label
Whoopi Goldberg and Raven-Symoné have rejected the extremely racist term "African-American".
“You know what uh uh! This is my country,” Goldberg said. “My mother, my grandmother, my great-grand folks, we busted ass to be here. I’m sorry. I’m an American. I’m not an African-American, I’m not a chick American, I’m an American!”
In October, 2014, Raven told Oprah Winfrey' "I'm tired of being labeled. I'm an American. I'm not an African American; I'm an American."
The time has come to eliminate this term "African-American" which perpetuates the old Southern racist concept that dark complexioned Americans are a separate race from light complexioned Americans. Those using the term essentially rely on the racist concept of "part black all black" [the one drop rule] rather than looking at all of a person's ancestors.
For example, journalists routinely label Asian ancestry golfer Tiger Woods "African-American" even though he has an Asian mother and a father with Asian and North American ancestry as well as some ancestors from sub-Sahara Africa. Raven-Symoné obviously has more skin complexion genes from ancestors outside of Africa than from sub-Saharan Africa ancestors. A century ago someone with her complexion might have decided to leave her family and pass for white.
Those who use the term "African-American" don't seem to understand that Africa refers to a continent, not a group of people. The Sahara Desert divides the continent into two genetically and culturally different populations. North American slaves came from the area south of the Sahara. In this post I will use "African" to designate persons from south of the Sahara.
Southern racism treated dark complexioned individuals as if their only ancestors came from Africa. The term "Africa-American" perpetuates this false claim. The fact is that African DNA began mixing with British DNA at Jamestown in the early 17th Century. The first Africans arrived at Jamestown in1619 and were treated like the white indentured servants. Indentured servants were temporary slaves who used their labor to pay off a debt. In the North American colonies the debt was likely the cost of travel to the colony. Many of the Irish indentured servants, like the Africans, were forced to move to North America. For the Africans, the debt was the purchase price from the slave traders. Many of those with African ancestry who were brought to North America came from the West Indies rather than directly from Africa. Some of these may have had some European or western hemisphere ancestry.
Marriages across the color line began occurring even before African indentured servant John Punch married a white woman, who was probably also an indentured servant, in 1636. Four years later Punch was sentenced by a judge to be the first permanent slave in the British North American colonies after he and two other indentured servants ran away. Punch's marriage deserves special attention because it is the earliest marriage to produce traceable descendants. Nobel Prize winner Ralph Bunch is one of his black descendants. One of his white descendants is Stanley Ann Dunham the mother of President Barack Obama.
In the early years of the Virginia colony people sometimes had to marry across the black, white and red color lines because the small population reduced the number of potential mates. A similar situation existed in Spanish and French North American settlements. The earliest connection between an African and North Americans occurred in Spanish Florida in 1526 when a slave escaped and was accepted by a North American village. The practice of accepting escaped slaves would continue in the British colonies and later in the United States.
The process of British and African genetic integration accelerated briefly after the British government authorized permanent slavery. The law said that a child's status [slave or free] would be determined by the status of the mother. A white child of a slave mother would become an indentured servant. A black child would become a permanent slave. Slave owners knew that a child with a black parent and a white parent would be black so they forced their white female indentured servants to mate with their African male slaves. White male indentured servants had little choice but to mate with African female slaves.
Only about 500,000 Africans were imported to North America during the nearly 200 years the slave trade was legal with most of them arriving before America won its independence. The first U.S. census showed a population in 1790 of 3,172,000 whites and 757,000 blacks. Thus it is likely that most descendants of slaves had multiple ancestors living in North America before the Revolution. The descendants of slaves could have a hundred different ancestors who were living in North America before the American Revolution. At seven generations back a person can have 128 different ancestors.
In slave societies it is common for males in the owner class to have sex with female members of the slave class especially unmarried females. Unmarried female slaves may even encourage such attention to gain better treatment. White male - black female relationships were common in New Orleans during the Spanish and French because men from these countries often arrived without wives. The introduction of European DNA into the black population continued during the Jim Crow era when southern white men were able to rape black women without fear of punishment.
The introduction of African DNA into the white population was more indirect because those babies who received dark complexion genes would be born with dark complexions. African DNA involving other than skin color genes entered the white population when persons with African ancestry were born without the dark complexion genes and passed for white. Some descendants of the early unions between Africans and Europeans had "lost" enough dark complexion genes to pass for white by the American Revolution. This process would continue. By 1800 some slaves qualified as white such as Thomas Jefferson's concubine Sally Hemings. No paintings of her are available, but she was described as white with long straight hair.
It seems likely that many who passed for white didn't tell their children. .President Warren G. Harding was aware he had recent black ancestry but Ann Dunham apparently did not know she had African ancestry. If she had known she likely would have told her son Barack. Some people believe as many as five other presidents could have African ancestors.
The dark skinned descendants of slaves should be allowed to claim all their ancestors, not just the ones who came from Africa. Their ancestors came here and became a new people who are a blend of peoples from three, and in some cases four, continents. They only have some genes in common with the peoples of sub-Saharan Africa. The Americans who have some African ancestors made their own culture after they got here. They helped make this country what it is and deserve to be recognized as full fledged Americans -- not quasi Americans.
It's time we Americans recognize that America is not the home of a black race and a white race, but instead is the home of a single race whose ancestors were red and yellow, black and white.
The Impressions lamented in their song "This is My Country" --
"Some people think we don't have the right
To say its my country
Before they give in, they'd rather fuss and fight
Than say its my country"
It's time we started encouraged the descendants of slaves to call America, rather than Africa their country. If light skinned Americans whose ancestors all arrived after the Civil War can call themselves 100% Americans, why must dark skinned Americans whose ancestors may have arrived before the American Revolution be treated as part American and part something else. Many slaves earned their freedom by helping to defeat the British during the Revolution.

Wanton Destruction of Historic Art
The world was appalled when fanatical members of the Taliban blew up
ancient Buddhist statues carved into a mountain in
Afghanistan. They destroyed the priceless artifacts as part of
an effort to eliminate items they didn't considered
politically correct. More recently ISIS members
have been doing the same thing in Iraq. They have even
been destroying historical artifacts other Muslims consider
acceptable.
Unfortunately, this vandalism oriented mental condition has begun infecting people in the South. The southern vandals have begun destroying Civil War related art such as statues remembering the men who led the Southern states into the disaster known as the Civil War and in the process caused the end of slavery.
As the great grandson of a Yankee soldier I've never really understood why southern whites would want to honor such men. I presume they did not put up the statues because they knew the statues would be pigeon roosts.
It would have made more sense if the former slaves had erected the statues to thank the men who provoked northerners into ending slavery. In 1860 there was little prospect for ending slavery. Most northerners opposed slavery in their states because they hated the people held as slaves. The decision by southern states to leave the union and fight a lengthy war so angered northerners that they decided to get even with southerners by freeing southern slaves and granting the freed slaves rights that were denied in some northern states. Blacks couldn't even live in Illinois. The descendants of slaves shouldn't be destroying Civil War monuments. They should be protecting the monuments to those who inadvertently brought a end to slavery. Southerners should include signs with the monuments thanking the men who caused the north to end slavery.
The Muslim extremists who have been destroying historic art have been doing so to cover up the fact people in the region once had different religious beliefs. Are the people who are leading the effort to destroy historic art in the south trying to cover up the fact that southern slavery once caused a major war? The presence of Civil War monuments can lead to questions about what caused the war. Without the monuments, whites can avoid dealing with questions about the southern past.

Whoopi Goldberg Rejects Racist Label

Planned Parenthood Worse then Slavers
Planned Parenthood has found an even more morally repugnant way to
make money than selling men, women and children for
profit. Lifenews has been running a series of
stories about how Planned Parenthood has been selling aborted
baby parts for profit. They separate the parts from the babies
they abort and sell the parts for research or medical treatment.
Maybe someone other than I could justify donating parts from aborted babies for research or treatment, but there is no way to justify selling baby parts like they were parts from a wrecked car.
I wonder if the black women who allow Planned Parenthood to abort their babies know Planned Parenthood plans to sell the baby parts for Planned Parenthood's profit like an auto savage yard sells old car parts.

The Truth About Slavery
Many of the descendants of North American slaves have a delusion
that slavery was only about white people owning black
people. The fact is that Africans were capturing,
enslaving and selling each other for centuries before Christopher
Columbus discovered a new market for African slave
traders. Africans continued to enslave each other after
the end of North American slavery. There are numerous reports
that Africans still practice slavery.
Newton eventually got a position as the captain of a slave ship. A religious experience convinced Newton to become a Christian minister and become active in the movement to abolish slavery. He wrote the popular hymn "Amazing Grace" which according to gospel singer Larnelle Harris uses a west African sorrow chant for the melody.
The initial forced labor in the British North American colonies involved indentured servants who served a limited amount of time and were then freed. Many whites volunteered to serve a period of time in exchange for funds to pay for their trip to North America. The Africans and many Irish were forced to travel to the British colonies. Irish were sometimes sentenced to "transportation to America" for illegal acts. Most indentured servants were white, particularly Irish, but some were Africans like Anthony Johnson who like white indentured servants was given some land after being freed. Johnson used indentured servants on his land.
Later when a decision was made to allow people to be held as permanent slaves, only Africans could be permanent slaves because they were foreigners. The law didn't allow British subjects to be permanent slaves. However, initially black children of indentured servants could be treated as permanent slaves because the mother's status as free or nor free determined the child's status. By the time permanent slavery began whites and blacks had been having relationships for years and produced children of mixed ancestry. Some plantation owners forced white indentured servants to mate with black men so the children would become permanent slaves. This practice increased the portion of the slave population that had European [white] genes as well as African [black] genes. The slave population received additional white DNA from slave owners and overseers.
The relationships among those of mixed ancestry and between those with mixed ancestry and whites were producing children who could " pass for white " in the 18th Century. Some with a slightly dark complexion might have claimed to be of North American or Mediterranean ancestry to gain acceptance as whites. The relationship between Thomas Jefferson and his sister-in-law and virtual wife Sally Hemings provides an example of this situation. Hemings was the daughter of a union between Jefferson's father-in-law John Wayles. and a slave. Wayles took Hemings' mother as his concubine after his first three wives died. Hemings was legally classified as "white" and had long straight hair, but the social situation and laws governing slavery likely made an actual marriage impossible. Some of their children later passed for white after being freed and leaving Virginia.
This situation demonstrates that slavery was no longer about "race" or "color" in 1800. Even though Hemings was the "white" daughter of a plantation owner, she was still considered a slave who became part of the property of her father's estate when he died in 1774.
Various accounts in the following years indicate that household servants were often of lighter complexion than field slaves. Many suggest this situation indicates color prejudice. The more likely explanation is that the household servants had lighter complexions because they were related to the plantation owner.
By the time of the Civil War there were a relatively small number of black slave owners and many slaves who were light complexioned or even white. The strange case of Jane / Alexina Morrison demonstrates that slavery wasn't necessarily about color. According to the slave trader who sold her in Louisiana the blonde haired blue-eyed young woman he called "Jane" was born a slave. The woman who called herself "Alexina" sued him for kidnapping her after she escaped from him. The case bounced around the Louisiana courts just before the Civil War with juries siding with the woman and the courts with the slave trader. It apparently is still technically before the courts. Regardless of which person was telling the truth, the fact that the courts even considered the possibility of Morrison being a slave demonstrates that white slaves were a part of southern slavery by the start of the Civil War. Some of the escaped slaves whose narratives were published before the Civil War mentioned having seen white slaves.

Journalists Share Blame for Charleston Tragedy
American journalists are partly to blame for the recent racist
shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, because they continue to
perpetuate the old southern racist myth that black Americans are a
separate "race" from white Americans. Journalists seem
to support the "one
drop rule" or "part black all black". For example, they
continue to refer to Asian ancestry golfer Tiger Woods as
"African American" even though his mother has Asian and Dutch
ancestry and his father has Asian, European and North American
ancestry as well as African ancestry. These racist journalists
even refer to a child who has a black parent and a white parent as
"biracial" even though the black parent might have more recent
ancestors from Europe and North America than from Africa.
The extremely racist term "African-American" implies that blacks are Africans living in America rather than Americans with some African ancestors. The only African ancestors most descendents of American slaves had left Africa over two centuries ago. The number of Africans arriving in the United States dropped substantially after the government banned the importation of slaves in 1808. Some African ancestors of black Americans left Africa four centuries ago. Twenty Africans arrived at Jamestown in August, 1619. Others had been living in the Spanish controlled areas of what became Florida, Georgia and South Carolina before the English established Jamestown or landed at Plymouth Rock. It was the Spanish who gave the Africans the name "Negro" which is Spanish for "black".
The dark skinned peoples of Sub-Saharan Africa might be of a different race from the light skinned peoples of northern Africa and Europe, but Americans have had too much sex across the color line over the last 400 years to be of different races.
Sex across the color line in North America has been documented as far back as the 1630's when African John Punch married a white woman believed to be an indentured servant. Punch is believed to be the first permanent slave in Virginia. Previously "slaves" were called indentured servants and they served for a specific number of years. His descendents were called "Bunch" and are believed to include diplomat Ralph Bunche and Stanley Ann Dunham, the mother of President Barack Obama. The small population of early Virginia meant that people often had to find mates across the color line.
In the mid 17th Century slave owners decided to turn the dark skinned slaves into permanent slaves with white slaves continuing to be indentured servants. To increase the number of permanent slaves some slaves owners required white female slaves to mate with African male slaves so that the resulting dark skinned babies could be kept as permanent slaves. The white male slaves would then be left to mate with African female slaves.
The early Africans began a long association with the various North American peoples. The first association of an African with North Americans occurred in 1526. In the English colonies some villages would accept escaped slaves into the village and others would not. In the early 19th century the Cherokee and some others held black slaves.
Virtually all the African ancestors of slaves arrived before importation of Africans was outlawed in 1808. Only about 500,000 Africans were imported into North America during the period of the North American slave trade. This number is significant considering that the total U.S. population in 1790 was only about 4 million with about 20% or 757,000 blacks.
The only inherent difference between black and white Americans is a half dozen genes that control skin color. A person can have a dark complexion even though a majority of skin color genes come from European ancestors because the genes that code for dark complexion are dominant and only a couple are needed for a relatively dark complexion. One of the genes that codes for a dark complexion is common among peoples of North America and Asia as well as Africa.
The slave genome continued to receive new DNA from plantation owners and overseers until slavery was ended. The most prominent example of this practice in the United States was the relationship between President Thomas Jefferson and his concubine Sally Hemings.
Southern laws prohibiting sex across the color line were ignored if the female was black such as in the case of the mother of Sen. Strom Thurmond's black daughter. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is known to have had a white male ancestor who provided his "Y" chromosome. In the South white men could rape black women without fear of prosecution until the 1960's.
It's likely that some children of mixed ancestry were passing for white by the early 18th Century. Many whites who researched their ancestry after the "Roots" television series were surprised to find ancestors whose military records included the letter "C" after the name for "Colored". President Warren G. Harding acknowledged he had some black ancestors. Some believe that four other white presidents may have had African ancestors. It is particularly likely that President Abraham Lincoln got his dark curly hair from a black ancestor. Many of his contemporaries believed he had slave ancestors. Most white people who have African ancestors probably don't know it because that type of information usually was kept secret when a person passed for white.
It's time we Americans recognize that America is not the home of a black race and a white race, but instead is the home of a single race whose ancestors were red and yellow, black and white.
Those who are serious about eliminating racism need to begin by eliminating racist terms like "African-American" and racist myths like the idea colors separate us into different races. They need to concentrate on how we are the same rather than how we are different. We need to recognize the wisdom of the Lakota phrase Aho Mitakuye Oyasin (We Are All Related) .
Black leaders along with politicians and journalists should forget the spurious issue of the Confederate flag. As the great grandson of a Union army veteran, I don't really understand why southerners have a fascination with the flag, but it is not inherently a symbol of racism. I've always understood it has a defiance of authority. Eliminating the flag will do absolutely nothing to eliminate racism. The action might actually encourage violent racists. With one violent act a coward terrorized the black population of the south. Racists may think that all they will have to do is wave a confederate flag and black people will hide under their beds. Normal people don't understand that some people, especially some men, would rather be a pariah then a nobody.
Eliminating the flag will make the little coward who committed murder in God's House a major hero among his kind and a major historical figure. He will be mentioned in history books as the man who caused southern states to change their flags. To borrow a quote from the late Paul Harvey: "he [the killer] would want me to mention his name."

Black Leaders Impeding Dr. King's Dream
The biggest impediment to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s, dream
of a society in which color is not considered important is the
continued used of the extremely racist term
"African-American". The term implies the
descendants of slaves are a separate race whose members belong
in Africa rather than the United States even though many
have ancestors who were living in North America long before
the American Revolution.
The term "African American" arbitrarily segregates people by skin color. The term treats people with dark complexions as if they only had African ancestors even if more of their ancestors came from somewhere else. For example, sportscasters call Asian ancestry golfer Tiger Woods "African American" even though his mother is Asian and his father had Asian and North American ancestors as well as African ancestors.
.
The only inherent difference between black and white Americans is a half dozen genes that control skin color. A person can have a dark complexion even though a majority of skin color genes come from European ancestors because the genes that code for dark complexion are dominant and only a couple are needed for a relatively dark complexion. One of the genes that codes for a dark complexion is common among peoples of North America and Asia as well as Africa
North American residents have been having sex across the color line since the first African slaves had sexual relationships with their Spanish masters in the 16th Century Spanish colonies located in what are now Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Sexual relations occurred with the North American peoples who lived in the vicinity of plantations for the first two hundred years of American slavery and accepted runaway slaves into their villages.
Initially slaves in the British colonies were indentured servants who only had to serve as slaves for a few years. Most early slaves were from the British isles, especially Ireland where the English were anxious to take ownership of Irish lands. Initially the more expensive African slaves were also treated as indentured servants.
By the mid 17th Century slave owners decided to turn the dark skinned slaves into permanent slaves with white slaves continuing to be indentured servants. To increase the number of permanent slaves some slave owners required white female slaves to mate with African male slaves so that the resulting dark skinned babies could be kept as permanent slaves. Laws adopted during the period preventing sex across the color line were primarily intended to keep free white from having dark skinned babies who would have been born free rather than slave
Virtually all the African ancestors of slaves arrived before Congress outlawed importation of Africans in 1808. Only about 500,000 Africans were imported into North America which means that virtually all slaves were born in North America to parents of mixed ancestry; .
The slave genome continued to receive new DNA from plantation owners and overseers until slavery was ended. In slave societies it is common for men of the master class to have sex with women of the slave class. The most prominent example of this practice in the United States was the relationship between President Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings.
Southern laws prohibiting sex across the color line continued to be ignored if the female was black such as in the case of the mother of Sen. Strom Thurmond's black daughter. Dr. King is known to have had a white male ancestor who provided his "Y" chromosome. As recently as the early 1960's, young southern white women were told that boy friends who received passionate good night kisses might seek sexual satisfaction in the black community.
White men could rape black women without fear of prosecution until the 1960's.
Sex across the color line has increased since the 1960's because of acceptance of relationships between white women and black men.
It is very likely that President Abraham Lincoln got his dark curly hair from a black ancestor. Many of his contemporaries believed he had slave ancestors.
It's time we started allowing the descendants of slaves to call America, rather than Africa their country.

African American Is a Segregationist Term
Jesse Washington recently reported that many dark skinned Americans recognize that they are not "African" Americans in spite of what some racists say.
The term "African-American" perpetuates the principle tenet of Southern racism: "part black, all black" under the "one drop rule".
Those who use the term are in effect segregating Americans with dark complexions from the rest of the population they may be related to. Those who use the term believe that those with dark complexions should only be able to claim their African ancestors and should forget about ancestors who came from Europe, North America or Asia even if most of a person's ancestors came from places other than Africa.
The media in particular apply the term indiscriminately to any American with a dark complexion. For example, they call golfer Tiger Woods "African American" even though his ancestry is predominately Asian. His mother is Asian and his father had Asian as well as African and American Indian ancestors.
Dr. Martin Luther King dreamed of a day in which color would not be important. Unfortunately, the media along with many politicians and black leaders are still preoccupied with skin color.
Members of the media still falsely claim that differences in skin color among Americans indicate a racial difference. Perhaps there is an European "race" that is white and an African "race" that is black, but if there is an American race it is red and yellow, black and white. We Americans are a mixture of peoples from all parts of the world.
As the Lakota say, Aho Mitakuye Oyasin (We Are All Related) regardless of the color of our skin.
The fact that a person has dark skin doesn't mean a majority of ancestors came from Africa. Dark skin only means a person received one or more of the half dozen skin color related genes that produce "black" skin from an African ancestor. Some of the genes associated with dark complexion are also present in persons from other parts of the world, especially India and Australia. The versions of the skin color genes that cause dark skin are dominant genes which means if a person has a dark version of the gene, complexion will be dark even if the other gene is associated with light skin. Incidentally, the African gene pool includes the albino gene which means some residents of Africa have pale skin.
Calling black Americans African-Americans denies them the opportunity to claim their European (especially Irish) and North American ancestry. The first Africans in the English colonies worked with the Irish in the fields and occasionally became sexually involved with them. In some cases planters deliberately forced Irish women to have children by African men to produce children of a desired complexion. Later, Irish overseers and plantation owners sometimes offered favors for sex or just raped slaves.
Until the 1960's Southern white men could rape black women without fearing punishment. Some black women voluntarily had sex with white employers or their sons. Former Sen. Strom Thurman fathered a daughter by his parent's 16-year-old housekeeper when he was a young man. Young southern women were told that if their good night kisses were too passionate, their boyfriends might seek sexual satisfaction in the black community.
Some black Americans can trace their ancestry back to President Thomas Jefferson and his virtual wife Sally Hennings. DNA tests confirmed the claim that Sally Hennings descendants were also descendants of Thomas Jefferson. The tests examined the "Y" chromosome which is passed from father to son.
A test of the "Y" chromosome of Martin Luther King III indicates that he and his civil rights leader father Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had a north European male ancestor like about 33% of black American males.
The Spanish who established colonies in South Carolina, Florida and Georgia in the 16th Century using African slaves were less likely than the British to bring wives and instead used their slaves for sexual satisfaction. The French in Louisiana also had a shortage of white women. The French, unlike the English, even used terms indicating the proportion of African and European ancestry.
African slaves of the Spanish started a long association with the original inhabitants of North America that continued in the British colonies. The Africans left behind when Spain withdrew from Florida joined with the Seminoles. In the English colonies the Cherokees and some other tribes socialized with the Africans, gave refuge to runaway slaves or had African slaves of their own.
Many white Americans, including former President Warren G. Harding, have African ancestors. Some believe as many as four other white presidents had African ancestors. After the "Roots Miniseries" many whites who researched their family histories were surprised to find ancestors who served in the military who had a "C" after their names for "colored".
Most whites with African ancestors probably don't even know it because their African ancestors whose skin was light enough to pass for white covered up their past. It would only take a few generations of people with mixed parentage to have descendants with skin light enough to pass for white. If only one gene were involved, the math of inheritance would indicate that if two parents each had one black parent and one white parent approximately 25% of their children would have white skin. The math is more complicated with the involvement of multiple genes, but the probability of some light skinned children increases with each generation.
Racists sometimes suggest that black males have a greater propensity for violence especially against women and falsely ascribe that characteristic to their African ancestors. If some black men actually have a genetic tendency to commit rape and murder it would be far more likely that they inherited the gene from a white male ancestor who raped one of their black female ancestors than that they inherited it from an African male ancestor.
Another popular stereotype is that blacks have "rhythm" which they are supposed to have inherited from their African ancestors. Although the slaves' African heritage would have influenced their music, it seems more likely that the social and biological association with the musically oriented Irish would be more responsible for the black emphasis on music.
The Irish responded to the repressive treatment by the English through musical expression. They would have passed that tradition along to the Africans whom they initially worked with as "indentured servants" and later supervised after black slavery was established. The slaves blended their Irish and African traditions with their own situation. They concentrated on expressing themselves through music because their oppressors didn't allow other ways to "fight" their situation. Watch Irish groups like Riverdance and Celtic Woman and then say that black Americans could only have gotten "rhythm" from African ancestors.
The first African "servants" arrived in Jamestown in 1619 only 14 years after the founding of the settlement. During the two centuries of the Atlantic slave trade only about 500,000 additional Africans were imported into North America. Britain led the way to ending the Atlantic slave trade in 1807 and the United States quickly followed to outlaw the importation of slaves without prohibiting the internal slave trade. Thus, the vast majority of the 4.5 million blacks living in the U.S. in 1860 were born here to parents and grandparents who were born here. A substantial portion had at least some ancestors who were living in North America at the time of the American Revolution.
It's time we recognize that the only African ancestors of the descendants of slaves arrived here centuries ago. We need to recognize that those dark skinned Americans whose ancestors were slaves are just as deserving of being called regular Americans as those of us with light skins without any modifier that segregates them from the rest of us.
Americans with dark skins should be allowed to claim all of their ancestors, not just those who provided the genes responsible for their skin color. Those of us with light skins need to accept the possibility that many of those with dark skins are our distant cousins. Those of us whose ancestors arrived here a couple of centuries ago or came from the British Isles, especially Ireland, likely had relatives who had sexual relations with the descendants of Africans. We could also have ancestors who came from Africa. Those whose ancestors have lived in the south for several generations, especially if they have dark naturally curly hair, could easily have an ancestor who passed for white at some time in the past.
Americans need to recognize that color is only skin deep. It doesn't totally define us.
